Individual Soccer Training

This summer I helped my friend Sven create his first website. He was doing private soccer training to earn some money, and so he created privatesoccertraining.com. I was blown away that he was actually able to get that domain name. Whenever I search for a domain name I want, every possible version of it has been taken by cyber squatters. The other day we were talking about his site, and came up with the idea of turing it into a registry of private soccer trainers. We decided to meet for a few hours this last Sunday and see how much we could get done.

We thought up a bunch of other phrases that people might use to find a soccer trainer, plugged them into the Google keywords tool, and found that “individual soccer training” was actually searched for almost twice as much as private soccer training. So we decided to keep his site where it was and use individualsoccertraining.com. Not the easiest name to type in, but it’s what people are searching for, so really they just need to click on the search result.

After registering the name, I started trying to crank out the site, while Sven put together a database of soccer trainers he could find on the internet. In the process we came upon a few sites that also listed soccer trainers, which was a bit of a bummer, but none of them did it well, and even looked abandoned.

It’s a super simple site for now. It just has a signup for soccer coaches/trainers, and an listing that we manually created in HTML. Nothing fun and dynamic yet. We were really just trying to get as far as we could in a few hours, and I didn’t feel like building a whole database driven backend. If this site actually starts to get popular among players and coaches, I’ll probably redo the site in Ruby on Rails. It’s a pretty simple app, but I’m not comfortable enough with Rails to have finished the site the same day.

We didn’t get it completely done, but we got pretty far. So we’re testing the waters for now. We’ll be watching the stats to see if people are actually looking for individual soccer trainers and finding our site. We’ve got some pretty big ideas, but we want to make sure there’s interest first.
