Video Transcoding Software
One of Sevenwire’s main development projects right now is video transcoding software called Zencoder. This is a great project for many reasons. For one, Sevenwire owns a portion of the company, meaning that if it succeeds we’ll profit from it. Client work is fine and all, but to have a project that brings in more than just income from developer hours would be awesome.
Secondly, Zencoder is partnering with ON2 to create an on demand video encoding service called FlixCloud. I made the temporary signup page.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how that project turns out. When I worked at APU I did a lot of video transcoding, and even built a little video site and player. Back then I used the Sorenson Squeeze software, which really is awesome. The only way I’d improve it is by making it web-based so files can automatically be transcoded an placed on the appropriate server. So if we can get the important features of Squeeze into FlixCloud I’ll be really happy. Brandon and Nate are working late tonight getting FlixCloud ready for internal demos this month. Expect a February public release.
So besides being really interested in the projects, I actually have little to do with the development of FlixCloud and the Zencoder video transcoding software. I’m busy on other design and PHP projects, since I don’t have a grasp of Ruby on Rails yet. The part of Zencoder that I have been able to get involved with is the marketing website, Zencoder.tv. I added the cool parallax graphics at the top. When you’re on the Zencoder site, resize the browser window and you’ll see the colors move around. It’s a newish CSS trick that was fun to play around with. You can see my test file here. I’ve also been doing a bit of SEO on the site. The target phrase at the moment is Video Transcoding Software, hence the title and purpose of this post. So far we jumped from nowhere in the search results to 11th (top of the second page). I did a little bit more today, plus this post, so hopefully that’ll boost us to the first page for video transcoding software. <– See how I fit it in again.
