I’ve started the decade by moving up to Silicon Valley. Los Gatos, CA to be specific. Myself and two other founders of Zencoder are here to do some focused work and hopefully raise some capital for further development.

At the moment I’m alone in a house deep in the woods. The other two guys don’t show up until tomorrow.

It’s super quiet except for the occasional house noise, or distant truck struggling up a hill. A little creepy. I’m fighting the urge to think of scenes from The Shining. It probably didn’t help that I drank some caffeine then went to bed early.

Last year around this time I started writing one post every day. Even though I only made it through a few months, it was a great excercise, so I’m trying it again. It should be a little easier this time since i’m so secluded.

Also my beautiful girlfriend Jenni will be staring up her regular blogging as well, so check it out.

Until tomorrow…if I make it through the night, muahahaha! …frik

Well the post-it note on my alarm clock worked. Just got home from a soccer game and almost jumped into bed without posting today, but the note saved me. The one problem though is I don’t have anything to post on, which is why I’m writing this lame one.

I have a bunch of future blog ideas floating around, in different text documents on my computer. I think I need to organize those so if it comes to this point again I have somewhere to go for ideas.

Either way it’s gonna be hard to convince myself to write anything significant this late at night, so I need to do a better job of planning ahead on nights like this.

It’s been over a month now since I started this exercise, and I’m still enjoying it. I still need to push myself to write more productive posts, on my other blogs. I keep falling back on this blog because it’s easy, but that wasn’t really the goal.

I think I’ll limit myself to three times per week on this blog. That should force me to write some better content. We’ll see how that goes.

I was doing really well posting once per day, especially in Texas where I didn’t have any of my usual distractions. I had almost two full weeks, but then the day after I got back I forgot.

My indoor soccer team had a double header that night, then we went and watched The Office and ate way too much Del Taco (nothing else was open).

By the time I got home I had just enough energy to take a quick shower, and then pass out on my bed.

So anyway, to combat these late night brain farts, I’ve installed a security measure. I put a Post-It note reminder on my alarm clock. If it actually comes to the point where I need this reminder, I doubt I’ll have much energy to post, but at least it gives me a fighting chance.

For this post I’m just using the iPhone web browser and the normal wordpress admin. I’m starting to see why they made a wordpress iPhone app.
When writing a post, if you turn the phone sideways you can only see about 3 lines vertically, and about 90% of the line horizontally. If the phone is vertical you can only see about 7 words horizontally, or 50% of the line. So either way the sceen is scrolling a lot, and it’s a pain to go back and edit something earlier.

I should mention that you can’t edit in visual mode period, you have to use html mode.

The HTML helpers are still convenient compared to the iPhone app, though they seem to be finicky.

Testing bold.

Scratch that. I’ve got a short post here and it’s already a pain to scroll the page up to hit the HTML buttons.

The “close tags” button worked just then, but it wasn’t working when I made the link.

Looks like I’m going back to the app. The HTML helpers aren’t worth the annoyance of scrolling around. Hopefully they’ll add some helpers to the app soon

Posting everyday has been a great exercise. After only a few weeks I can tell I’m getting faster at finishing a post. During the day I sometimes find myself writing posts in my head and storing them away for later. Soon I need to start moving into writing more professional posts that benefit my company or one of my many projects. That will be more difficult, but I feel like it will be easier now than if I had tried a month ago.

In part 2 I mentioned I might have to give myself a break on weekends, and that was definitely necessary this last weekend. I had a pretty strenuous day Friday, and then left town almost immediately after work to go rock climbing with a friend. Then I had a full day of hiking and climbing on Saturday, and didn’t get home until late Saturday night. So the hour before bed that I normally take to write a post wasn’t very possible those days. I have however written two posts today already, so maybe I’ll use Sundays as sort of a catch up day.

I haven’t written a post on my iPhone yet. That would make it easier to get a post done when I’m away from my computer, but I don’t imagine it would be a lot of fun typing a post into the iphone keyboard. I’m sure those will be much shorter posts.

One thing I need to improve on is adding photos to my posts. I’m sure there’s stats out there that show posts with images get read more, but it’s really just kind of common sense. I’ve been a little lazy up to this point because of some server issues, but being a web designer, I really have no excuse. So hopefully some of my upcoming posts will utilize some pictures.

I totally spaced.

I think my first mistake was not setting a regular time to post during the day. I’m going to start taking an hour before I go to bed to post. That should help. I may also cut myself some slack on the weekends since my schedule is much less predictable. Though since I can post with my iPhone, there’s really no excuse.
