I actually updated SteveHeffernan.com

After years of it saying “I’m not making any promises”, with some jacked-up accidental jQuery effect that made everything disappear, I have updated steveheffernan.com. It was more about the content than anything else, so I went with a 600px wide, 1 column layout, with nothing interesting design-wise except some highlight-styled links.

Second iPhone Post

For this post I’m just using the iPhone web browser and the normal wordpress admin. I’m starting to see why they made a wordpress iPhone app.

First iPhone Post

I’m writing this post using the iPhone app for wordpress. I just realized two things: I don’t get to use the auto-HTML helpers that are in the web interface; and it sucks trying to code on the iPhone. It just replaced “href” with “greg”. So that’s probably the last link I’ll make. Continue Reading »

Crappy Airport Parking Website

Flying to TX tomorrow to see my new niece, and needed a place to park near Ontario Airport. I clicked the first search result, “Park ‘n Fly”, and it looked decent enough. I set up my reservation, put in my credit card info, and after hitting submit I realized I wasn’t on a secure page! I used to be really good about checking for that, but up to this point I’ve never seen a site that didn’t use a secure page on a form, especially when accepting credit cards, so I got lazy. Some web developer out there needs to be slapped. Here’s the unsecured site. Continue Reading »

Individual Soccer Training

This summer I helped my friend Sven create his first website. He was doing private soccer training to earn some money, and so he created privatesoccertraining.com. I was blown away that he was actually able to get that domain name. Whenever I search for a domain name I want, every possible version of it has been taken by cyber squatters. The other day we were talking about his site, and came up with the idea of turing it into a registry of private soccer trainers. We decided to meet for a few hours this last Sunday and see how much we could get done. Continue Reading »

One Post Per Day (part 3)

Posting everyday has been a great exercise. After only a few weeks I can tell I’m getting faster at finishing a post. During the day I sometimes find myself writing posts in my head and storing them away for later. Soon I need to start moving into writing more professional posts that benefit my company or one of my many projects. That will be more difficult, but I feel like it will be easier now than if I had tried a month ago. Continue Reading »

Rock Climbing Gym

Rock Climbing Gym
This weekend I went rock climbing with my friend Brad, the guitarist in my old band. Friday night we went to Rockreation, a rock climbing gym in Costa Mesa. The majority of the place was covered  in bolted-in handholds, as you can see in the photo. It was a lot of fun, and I learned a ton about rock climbing. As with any sport, there’s a whole other vocabulary to learn just to get by.

Priceline.com

I’m traveling out to Texas to visit my sister who just had her first kid, and I thought I would give Priceline a try. I’ve used them in the past and a got pretty cheap rate, so I decided to push it and wait until nearly the last minute and see what I could get. I realized this was kind of a dumb move.

MacRumorsLive Get’s Hacked

Every year during the Apple keynote at the MacWorld Expo, the MacRumors team provides an update feed to let everyone know what Apple is announcing. This year, towards the beginning of the keynote, strange messages started showing up in the feed. The first one saying, “STEVE JOBS JUST DIED.” It seemed like that might be just a joke, since Steve wasn’t even at the keynote anyway, but a few lines later read, “Retraction: Steve jobs did not just die. Don’t know how that got in there.” Soon after a few other strange messages showed up, including a link to one of the hacker’s websites. Shortly after that the entire MacRumorsLive website went down.

Video Transcoding Software

One of Sevenwire’s main development projects right now is video transcoding software called Zencoder. This is a great project for many reasons. For one, Sevenwire owns a portion of the company, meaning that if it succeeds we’ll profit from it. Client work is fine and all, but to have a project that brings in more than just income from developer hours would be awesome.
